For the Green Thumb:
Great Fall Seasonal Color

Because, "well, one does want a hint of color." -- Nathan Lane, 1996

Johnny Jump-Ups

Johnny Jump-Ups

Viola cornuta

A compact annual, the vibrant blooms are deep purple and yellow, creating a solid carpet of color for weeks. Prefers partial shade to full sun in rich moist, well-drained soil.

Suggested use: Around the base of trees, flower beds, containers, borders.
Miscellaneous: Keeping the faded blossoms picked will prolong the blooming period.

Ornamental Kale

Ornamental Kale

Brassica oleracea

As the weather cools, the purple, pink or white colors of the leaves become quite pronounced. Look attractive until spring when they bolt (flower and go to seed). Grown in organically rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil in full sun.

Suggested use: Large plantings, edging plants, and containers.
Miscellaneous: Edible, but not as good as its cousin in the grocery store.

Fall Aster

Fall Aster

Symphyotrichum oblongifolium

A very showy, low-growing, bushy plant with hundreds of daisy type blue-lavender flowers with yellow centers. It is very attractive to butterflies. Its mounds of gray-green foliage and flower buds create an interesting display through the summer followed by masses of flowers. Grow in full sun and in average to dry soil.

Miscellaneous: Drought-tolerant and Deer resistant.

Viola tricolor subsp. hortensis

A compact annual whose flowers have "faces." These plants offer colorful flowers for any season in your garden. They have one of the widest ranges of colors. Prefers partial shade to full sun in moist, well-drained soil.

Suggested use: Containers, borders, and ground covers.
Miscellaneous: Keeping the faded blossoms picked will prolong the blooming period.
